LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. –
Breana Stampfli and
Julianna Curtis of the FGCU women's tennis team conclude the fall slate for the Eagles with play in the highly-competitive Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic on Friday at the Lakewood Ranch Country Club. Highlighting the final day of fall action was
Stampfli's (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) singles win in round of 32.
"Today was a great experience for the girls as they learned a lot from this opportunity," head coach
Courtney Vernon said. "Breana had a very good win this morning, both she and Julianna will take a lot away from this experience. We now go into the offseason and will continue to work on different aspects and areas of where we need to grow in order to prepare for the regular season."
The day began with doubles play in the round of 32, where the pair of Eagles saw a hard-fought battle against Tennessee's Tiffany Tavares and Laurenceluc Guevremont. After staying on serve for a majority of the contest, a break on the Eagles near the end of the match gave the Volunteers the lead and ultimately the win at 8-6.
The morning progressed into the singles round of 32, where Stampfli earned her fifth win of the fall. Facing Colorado's Ashley Tiefel, Stampfli looked comfortable on the clay surface as she sailed to a straight-set win, 6-3, 6-2. The victory advanced the sophomore into the round of 16 for a match against top-seeded Belinda Woolcock of Florida. In the Friday afternoon contest, Stampfli tested ITA No. 89 Woolcock during the opening frame, but the Gator went on to control the tempo of the match, finding a win at 6-3, 6-1.
Putting a scare on her nationally-ranked opponent, was
Curtis (Tampa, Fla./Allendale Academy) in her round of 32 match against ITA No. 101 Marta Morga of Memphis, the tournament's No. 2 seed. The two went point-for-point in the opening frame to force a tiebreak at six games each, where Morga found a win over the freshman at 7-6(5), before continuing on to take the second set 6-2.
This was the first fall campaign for both Curtis and Stampfli, who joined the Green and Blue in January. After four tournaments, Curtis leads the time with a singles record of 6-5, Stampfli finishes at 5-4.
The Eagles will now break from competition before they begin their championship season in January.
