FORT MYERS, Fla. – In one of the more memorable freshman seasons in FGCU history, rookie
Sabrina Jaramillo recorded her 19
th singles win of the season on Sunday, recording the 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win over South Alabama's Jana Rovira at No. 4 singles.
Jaramillo dominated in the first set, then fought back after a disappointing second set. It marked Jaramillo's second consecutive win after upending North Florida's May Fadida on Friday, 6-2, 6-3. Jaramillo ends the regular season with a 19-8 record, going 13-7 in dual match play.
South Alabama (11-4) would prevail overall with a 4-2 match final over the Eagles (14-7). Sunday's contest closed out the regular season for FGCU. The team now awaits the ASUN Tournament seedings (due to be released this coming week) and begins preparing to host the ASUN Tournament Apr. 14-18 in Fort Myers.
FGCU's other point came from a gritty performance by
June Bjork. After dropping the first set to South Alabama's Cristina Tchanichev, Bjork battled back amid the heat to keep FGCU's hopes alive, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Cecilie Maeland was also on the verge of a three-set win. After dropping the opening set (4-6)against Manal Ennaciri, Maeland even the score in the second set (6-4) and was on the verge of victory with a 5-1 lead in the third set when the match was clinched by the Jaguars.
FGCU dropped the doubles point to South Alabama, who secured victories at No. 1 doubles with Rio Maeda and Jana Rovira defeating
Nora Svensson and Bjork, 6-3, and at No. 2 doubles, where Kenza Elakili and Manal Ennaciri overcame Maeland and
Anjali Kotecha, 6-4. Green & Blue's sole doubles win came at No. 3 doubles, as
Africa Burillo Berezak and
Sabrina Jaramillo triumphed over Jade Marie and Ava Rath, 6-2.
In singles, FGCU's
Sabrina Jaramillo put the team on the board with her win at No. 4 singles over Rovira. However, USA responded with victories at No. 6 singles, where Kenza Elakili defeated Burillo Berezak, 6-3, 6-2, and at No. 5 singles, where Jade Marie emerged victorious over
Anjali Kotecha, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2.
That is when Bjork added a point for the Eagles at No. 2 singles, rallying for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Tchanichev. The decisive point for the Jaguars came at No. 1 singles, where Maeda edged Svensson in a tight match, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, securing USA's dual match victory.
