MIAMI – The FGCU women's tennis team picked up three singles wins to end play at the FIU Panther Invitational on Sunday in Miami. Earning wins were
Breana Stampfli,
Sarah Means and
Julianna Curtis. Over the course of the three-day event, the Green and blue claimed 13 victories, 10 from singles and three from doubles.
"The girls have a lot to work on before the spring season," head coach
Courtney Vernon said. "And this weekend served as an opportunity to expose areas of where we need to grow before our first dual match in January."
Winning the A singles backdraw was
Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS), as she bested Eastern Michigan's Klara Supejova. After Means won the opening frame, 6-3, Supejova went on to take the second set with the same score. The third set remained close, but a push from Means in the end gave her a win at the 6-4 mark to take the match. In the A singles third-place match, sophomore
Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) picked up a win over Barry's Sonja Larsen. After dropping the first set, 3-6, Stampfli fought back to take the next frame, 6-4, and the tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-5).
After a first-round loss in B singles on Friday, freshman
Julianna Curtis (Tampa, Fla./Allendale Academy) followed in Means' footsteps and was crowned champion of the backdraw. To earn the title Curtis topped Eastern Michigan's Andrea Martinovska in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
After competition in three fall tournaments, Curtis leads the Eagles with a 6-3 mark in singles play, while Stampfli sits at 4-3 and Means at 4-5.
FGCU women's tennis will send one member to compete in the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic at Lakewood Ranch, Nov. 7-9. The remaining six members of the Green and Blue will break from competition before the Eagles turn their attention to the regular season, which begins in January.
