Ali Rogers’ Game-Winner in Overtime Lifts @FGCU_WSoccer Past Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – It was just six seconds into the third minute of overtime when a corner kick found its way to Ali Rogers who fired home her first score of the 2014 season to lift the FGCU women's soccer team (10-3, 3-0 Atlantic Sun) to a 2-1 victory at Kennesaw State (4-8-1, 1-2 A-Sun) on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles will now return home to play the five remaining matches in the regular season at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

The Eagles are now 3-0 through the first three games of A-Sun play for the third consecutive season and are unbeaten against conference opponents in 20-straight matches, including conference tournaments, dating back to the 2012 season. FGCU has also now gone undefeated and untied on the road in conference play during the regular season for the first time in program history.

"I'm obviously very pleased with the result," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "We started off hot but we did not play very well in the second half. Mel played a great ball in overtime and Ali was just in the right spot at the right time and punched it in. Like I've said before it's hard to get points on the road in this league so to go undefeated on the road this season is a tremendous accomplishment."

Tabby Tindell got the scoring started for the Eagles in the 18th minute when Shannen Wacker drove to the top of the box and fed the sophomore trailing the play who took one touch and fired a shot that deflected off the hands of the diving KSU goalkeeper and into the back of the net for her 14th goal of the season. Tindell is now just one goal shy of the matching her own single-season program record of 15 set last year. Wacker's assist on the play, her ninth of the season, inches her closer to the single-season assist record of 12 set by Ashley Ciesieczyk in 2011.

The Eagles would coast into halftime with their 1-0 advantage despite registering just four shots in the opening frame. FGCU would close the game with a 13-9 shot lead and needed just one in overtime to pick up the win. The Green and Blue held a 6-2 corner kick advantage by the end of the match and Brittany Brown needed to make four saves to preserve the victory.

The Owls came out firing in the second half by letting fly two shots before finally finding the goal. Alma Gardarsdottir drove in and fired the initial shot which Brown managed to save but she would lose control of the ball on the rebound at which point Marit Sandtroeen moved onto the ball and sent it into the back of the net for the equalizing tally in the 63rd minute.

In the 69th minute, the Eagles worked the ball deep into the KSU zone and even forced the Owl goalkeeper off her line on a cross. The ball would end up with Wacker who had nothing but wide-open net in front of her until a KSU defender recovered to block the senior's try.

In the 76th minute it was Tindell who managed to use clean footwork to free herself of the defense and come one-on-one with the Owl goalkeeper. Her angle would be cut off however and her shot would be punched away with one hand to preserve the tie in regulation, forcing the Green and Blue into a second overtime contest in its last three matches.

The Eagles went on the attack immediately in the first overtime and forced back-to-back corner kicks in the 92nd minute. It was the second service from Melissa Arnold that found its way to an open Ali Rogers on the six-yard line who used one touch to gather and fire home her first goal of the 2014 season to propel the Eagles to their 10th win and eighth consecutive double-digit win season.

Since dropping a 2-0 result to No. 16 South Carolina on Sept. 14 on a neutral field, the Eagles have outscored their opponents 17-3 with four shutouts in six games, including an 8-1 advantage against A-Sun competition. FGCU is 6-2 on the road this season and 4-0 at home. The record for most wins in a single-season is 14 set in back-to-back seasons by the NCAA Tournament bound 2011 and '12 Eagles.

NEXT UP
FGCU will look forward to five-straight at home to close the 2014 regular season beginning with Northern Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 10. NKU was 6-10-2 last season but have yet to score a goal against FGCU. The Eagles are 2-0 all-time against the Norse and have outscored them 8-0. The Norse are 4-5-3 this season, tied USC Upstate, 1-1, in its A-Sun opener and have since dropped back-to-back results to Jacksonville and North Florida. NKU can boast victories over Eastern Illinois, IUPUI, Robert Morris and Francis Marion.

Lipscomb will visit the FGCU Soccer Complex next on Oct. 12. The Bisons were one of FGCU's two ties in A-Sun play last season, both of which came on the road. The Eagles have never lost to Lipscomb. The Bisons have collected eight wins to date and are 2-0-1 with wins over Kennesaw State and Jacksonville with a tie opposite UNF to begin A-Sun play. 2013 All-Conference selection Ellen Lundy paces the offense with four goals and one assist for a team best nine points while 11 others have contributed goals to the cause.

JIM BLANKENSHIP
A veteran of over two decades in collegiate coaching, head coach Jim Blankenship, who was named the 2012 and 2013 A-Sun Coach of the Year, has built FGCU women's soccer into a yearly contender in the Atlantic Sun Conference and a rising program in the South Region in just eight seasons. Blankenship started the program in 2007 and has since guided the Eagles to seven eight double-digit win seasons, culminating with Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. In 2011 and 2012 he also led the Eagles to back-to-back A-Sun tournament championships and became the first team in the history of the university to make it to the NCAA Tournament. Blankenship has guided FGCU to a 94-35-17 overall record over the first eight seasons of the program's existence, including a 50-9-9 mark in the A-Sun.
