FORT MYERS, Fla. –
Ally Kasun scored her first two goals of the season, one in each half, to guide the FGCU women's soccer team (11-3, 4-0 Atlantic Sun) to a 2-0 victory over Northern Kentucky (4-6-3, 0-3-1 A-Sun) at the FGCU Soccer Complex on Friday night in the first of five home games for the Eagles to conclude the regular season. With the win the Eagles officially become the first to clinch a spot in the 2014 A-Sun Tournament.
Kasun, who is a two-time A-Sun First Team selection, came into the match with eight goals in her career, seven of which came during her freshman season and had not scored since Aug. 23, 2013 opposite Florida (33 games). The junior scored her first of the night on a brilliantly struck ball in the 33rd minute from the middle of the field, about 25 yards from the goal, into the top right-side corner. Her second came in the 50th minute when she took a service from a corner kick and redirected a header into the back of the net. Friday night is the first multi-goal performance in the career of the Lancaster, Pa. native.
"Ally is the engine that makes us go;" head coach
Jim Blankenship said. "She's been the guy that we go through and she doesn't have the numbers like she did her freshman year because we put her in a different role and a different tactical situation. But as you can see she is very capable of stepping up and she put her stamp on this game. She scored two phenomenal goals."
Outside of Kasun's goals
Brittany Brown made the play of the game stopping an NKU penalty kick in the fourth minute following an FGCU take-down in the box. The junior guessed correctly and dove to her right to make the stop while simultaneously deflecting the ball away from the danger area to prevent a rebound attempt.
"We kind of dodged a bullet early," Blankenship continued. "We didn't come out ready and they caught us by surprise and manufactured a penalty kick. Brownie came up big for us and made the save. She wasn't tested very often but that was huge because it's so early in the game and it's not the start we wanted and it's not the start we've had all year. But overall it's a good result against a good team, it keeps us at the top of the league. Credit to them, their defense held up, their goalkeeping was good and we had opportunities to score that they withstood it."
Brown needed to make just two saves to preserve her seventh shutout of the season and 25th of her career. The Eagles peppered NKU with 27 shots, the second most in a single game this season with 15 coming in the first half and attempted a season-high 16 corner kicks.
Tabby Tindell assisted Kasun on her goal in the 33rd minute when she drove from the right side of the field and across the top of the box before sliding the ball to an open Kasun for the one-touch shot that put the Eagles ahead 1-0 after the early scare from NKU.
Paulina Speckmaier attempted a team-high seven shots in this one while Tindell fired six. Kasun and
Kaitlin Parker each contributed three shots while seven others attempted at least one, including three players off the bench.
It was
Melissa Arnold who provided the corner kick service that led to Kasun's second score of the evening in the 50th minute. It was Arnold's fourth assist of the season, her third in three games and 17th of her career which rank fourth all-time in FGCU program history.
The Eagles are now 4-0 through the first four games of A-Sun play for just the second time in program history (2012) and are unbeaten against conference opponents in 21-straight matches, including conference tournaments, dating back to the 2012 season. FGCU still has not surrendered a goal to Northern Kentucky in three matches all-time, outscoring the Norse 10-0.
LIPSCOMBThe Bisons were one of FGCU's two ties in A-Sun play last season, both of which came on the road. The Eagles have never lost to Lipscomb. The Bisons have collected nine wins to date and are 3-0-1 with wins over Kennesaw State, Jacksonville and Stetson with a tie opposite UNF to begin A-Sun play. 2013 All-Conference selection Ellen Lundy paces the offense with five goals and one assist for a team best 11 points while 11 others have contributed goals to the cause.
