ATLANTA – The FGCU women's tennis team ended day two in the tournament of the Southeast's best picking up two wins from singles play at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta. The victories were the efforts of
Sarah Means and
Julianna Curtis.
Registering her second win for the Eagles this weekend was
Curtis (Tampa, Fla./Allendale Academy), playing the round of 16 in the B singles draw. The freshman needed just a pair of sets to find victory over Georgia State's Veronika Golanova, taking both of them with a score of 6-4. Curtis will continue her run with a quarterfinals matchup against Evveline Lepinay of Stetson tomorrow morning.
"I am very happy for Julianna and the courage she has shown over the past two days," head coach
Courtney Vernon said. "This weekend has been a great opportunity for her and she has shown tremendous bravery in big moments."
Earning a win in the consolation bracket of the main draw was
Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS), topping Atlantic Sun conference rival Marina Cunningham North Florida. After falling behind in the beginning of the match, the result of Cunningham's 6-0 decision in the first set, Means put up a fight in the second frame and found victory at 6-4. The final set told a different story as Means cruised to a 6-1 win to take the contest. In the consolation round of 16, Means couldn't escape Miami's Lina Lilekite, falling 6-4, 6-0.
"Sarah battled hard in both of her matches," Vernon said. "I was happy to see her continue to make steps in working to achieve her goals."
