Early Fireworks Propel @FGCU_WSoccer to 2-1 Victory over Lipscomb

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's soccer team (12-3, 5-0 Atlantic Sun) defeated Lipscomb (9-5-2, 3-1-1 A-Sun), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon to move to 5-0 through five games in A-Sun play for the first time in program history. Sophomore Tabby Tindell scored her single-season record tying 15th goal of the season just eight seconds into the game which is the fastest goal scored to start a game in FGCU history, tied for the fastest in A-Sun history and tied for sixth fastest in NCAA history.

Shannen Wacker scored the eventual game-winner in the seventh minute and the Eagles, despite a late rally from Lipscomb, were able to hold on for the 2-1 victory as they inch closer to a fifth-consecutive A-Sun regular season championship with just two matches against conference opponents remaining in the regular season.

"Getting the early lead was crucial," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "We talked about on Friday night how we gave up the early penalty kick and talked about how we don't want to have those kinds of starts so our goal was to come out and try to get a goal in the first five minutes so eight seconds is pretty great. It's a great way to start the game from there we just built from it. The whole first half was tremendous."

Wacker took the opening kick and carried it straight down the center of the field before serving the ball through to Tindell just as she crossed into the box. Tindell took one touch and slid the ball past the diving goalkeeper for the score. The goal was Tindell's 30th of her career making the Ocala native the first player in program history to reach that mark while also making her the second player in program history to reach the 70-point plateau.

Late in the sixth minute Tindell drove into the box again and as the goalkeeper came off her line to challenge she stroked a pass that was deflected to Wacker who fired home her fifth score of the season and 11th game-winning goal of her career, tying the senior with Tindell at the top of the FGCU record book in that category.

The Eagles settled in at that point and would finish the game with a 21-7 shot advantage marking the second-consecutive game and fifth time this season they have eclipsed the 20-shot mark. Paulina Speckmaier, who entered the match already leading the A-Sun in shot attempts, fired eight more while Wacker contributed four to lead the way for the Green and Blue attack.

Lipscomb applied heavy pressure in the waning minutes of the second half and Anna Lail scored on a perfectly struck shot from the top right corner of the box over the head of Brittany Brown to cut the lead in half in the 67th minute. The Bisons would manufacture a corner kick in the 90th minute but nothing would come of it, preserving the FGCU victory. The Eagles are now unbeaten in 24-straight matches at home against conference opponents which is the fifth longest active streak in the nation.

Emma Blackwell left the match after just 11 minutes of action with an injury leaving only Shea Rhoney and Brown as the only Eagles that have played every available minute this season.

LATELY
Since dropping a 2-0 result to No. 16 South Carolina on Sept. 14 on a neutral field, the Eagles have outscored their opponents 21-4 with five shutouts, including an 12-2 advantage against A-Sun competition. FGCU is 6-2 on the road this season and 6-0 at home. The record for most wins in a single-season is 14 set in back-to-back seasons by the NCAA Tournament bound 2011 and '12 Eagles.

NEXT UP
In a rematch of the 2013 A-Sun Championship game, Jacksonville returns to the FGCU Soccer Complex as the defending A-Sun Tournament Champions on Oct. 18. The Eagles peppered JU with 31 shots in the A-Sun title game but came away with a scoreless tie before falling in penalty kicks. The Dolphins are the only A-Sun program that FGCU does not have a winning record against (2-2-5). This season the Dolphins are 9-6-1 and 3-2 in A-Sun play with their losses coming in the form of a 1-0 result at Lipscomb and a 1-0 defeat at home against Kennesaw State.

Palm Beach Atlantic (2-5-1) stops in on Oct. 22 before FGCU concludes the regular season by welcoming Stetson on Oct. 25. Holding a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series, FGCU has not lost to the Hatters since 2007 and defeated SU last season on the road 4-0. The Hatters are 3-11-1 in 2014 with a 1-4 record in A-Sun play.

JIM BLANKENSHIP
A veteran of over two decades in collegiate coaching, head coach Jim Blankenship, who was named the 2012 and 2013 A-Sun Coach of the Year, has built FGCU women's soccer into a yearly contender in the Atlantic Sun Conference and a rising program in the South Region in just eight seasons. Blankenship started the program in 2007 and has since guided the Eagles to eight double-digit win seasons, culminating with Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. In 2011 and 2012 he also led the Eagles to back-to-back A-Sun tournament championships and became the first team in the history of the university to make it to the NCAA Tournament. Blankenship has guided FGCU to a 96-35-17 overall record over the first eight seasons of the program's existence, including a 52-9-9 mark in the A-Sun.
