FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU women's soccer team (13-3, 6-0 Atlantic Sun) defeated 2013 A-Sun Tournament champion Jacksonville (9-7-1, 3-3 A-Sun), 2-0 on Saturday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex to claim a fifth-consecutive A-Sun regular season championship thus securing home field advantage throughout the conference tournament which will be held Nov. 1-9. The Eagles will host both semi-final matchups on Nov. 7 and the championship match on Nov. 9.
Tabby Tindell provided the eventual game-winning score in the 14th minute for her single-season record breaking 16th goal and it was
Paulina Speckmaier who provided the insurance in the 59th minute on a long strike from outside the box. With the victory FGCU is now 3-2-5 all-time opposite JU.
"We're excited now but there's more to be done," head coach
Jim Blankenship said. "Here the expectations are quite high so we would like to be in position to play for a title and get to the NCAA Tournament but this is part of that process. Winning is hard and we don't take it for granted so we're extremely proud and happy for what we've done but I think there's that experience of knowing there's more to be done."
The FGCU attack was firing on all cylinders early in this one, registering four corner kicks in over the first 6:23 of the game. With four shots already off the mark,
Ally Kasun found Tindell in the middle of the field who drove down the center from 30 yards away from goal and moved into the box before firing a low shot past the JU goalkeeper for the go-ahead score.
Jacksonville used a quick strike to nearly net an equalizer moments later but the try would sail low and wide of the goal. The remainder of the first half was a back-and-forth affair but FGCU would come away with a 10-4 shot advantage and a commanding 7-1 lead on corner kicks. By the end of the match the Eagles had outshot the Dolphins 18-8 giving them a 48-15 shot advantage over the last two meeting between these two programs.
Brittany Brown made four saves in the match to preserve her eighth shutout of the season and 26th of her career.
FGCU continued to apply plenty pressure in the second frame and in the 59th minute it was
Ali Rogers who served a long cross from the right side to the top of the box when a JU defender deflected the ball out to Speckmaier who used just one touch to fire a long shot into the back of the net for the second tally of the game and her seventh of the season. The sophomore would fire eight more shots in this one, increasing her A-Sun leading total to 64 for the season.
The Eagles were able to stave off any further attack from Jacksonville and run out the clock on their 2-0 victory. FGCU has now matched its 2013 win total and has two regular season matches left with at least one postseason match to try and tie the program record of 14 wins in a season set by the NCAA Tournament bound 2011 and '12 teams.
LATELYSince dropping a 2-0 result to No. 16 South Carolina on Sept. 14 on a neutral field, the Eagles have outscored their opponents 23-4 with six shutouts, including a 14-2 advantage against A-Sun competition. FGCU is 6-2 on the road this season and 7-0 at home.
