FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf team wrapped up its first fall under head coach
Lee McCoy with a successful defense of its home title, a schedule that stretched from Japan to the Blue Monster, and a breakout semester from senior
Christian Figueredo.
Â
"This fall gave us a great look at who we are and what we can become," said head coach
Lee McCoy. "Winning West Bay again showed what this group is capable of, and the tougher weeks showed us exactly what we need to work on. Christian set the tone all semester, and our guys are hungry to get back out there in the spring."
Â
FGCU played 12 rounds across four tournaments this fall, posting a 288.77 adjusted scoring average and closing the semester nationally ranked No. 132.
Â
The Eagles' signature moment came at the West Bay Collegiate Invitational, where FGCU repeated as champions of its home event. The Eagles carded rounds of 276, 282 and 273 for a 33-under 831, holding off Lipscomb by one stroke in the 15-team field. Tied for the 36-hole lead, FGCU matched Lipscomb's 15-under 273 shot for shot in the final round to secure the program's first title under McCoy.
Â
The fall opened overseas at the Pan Pacific University Golf Super League Tournament in Shizuoka, Japan, where FGCU placed sixth in McCoy's debut. The Eagles also took on Trump National Doral's Blue Monster at The Bryson Invitational, finishing 11th, and closed the fall at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational, where they improved their team score every round (300-297-294) to finish 14th.
Â
Individually, Figueredo led the Eagles in three of four events and posted a team-best 70.82 adjusted scoring average over 12 rounds. His top showing came at West Bay, where he finished runner-up at 11-under 205 (67-69-69), two shots behind individual champion Uy Doan of Stetson. At The Bryson Invitational, he shared the first-round lead with a 4-under 68 and entered the final round tied for second before finishing tied for 11th. Figueredo ends the fall ranked No. 293 nationally, a jump of more than 400 spots from his No. 719 ranking at the end of last season.
Â
Brody Stevenson joined Figueredo in the top 10 at West Bay, finishing eighth at 8-under 208 (67-72-69).
Alfie Storer carded FGCU's low round on consecutive days in Japan on his way to a tie for 27th, and closed West Bay with a 4-under 68. Freshman
Jay Wilson tied for 24th at West Bay behind a final-round 67, the Eagles' low round of the day, and added a tie for 33rd at The Bryson.
Mason Fundingsland posted a 3-under 69 that counted toward the team score in the second round at West Bay, while freshman
Trevor Tingle competed in Japan.
Â
FGCU returns to action Feb. 1-2 at the SeaBest Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville at Atlantic Beach Country Club in Atlantic Beach, Fla.
