LINCOLN, Neb. - Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball closes out nonconference play at the Husker Invitational this weekend, taking on No. 25 North Carolina and No. 1 Nebraska at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Both matches are first-ever meetings between the programs, and Sunday's match marks the first time in program history FGCU has faced the nation's top-ranked team.

FGCU opens against North Carolina Saturday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. ET before closing the trip against Nebraska Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. ET.

"We're just coming off a trip from Missouri, which is also a great town and a great environment, but now we're heading into Nebraska volleyball, the No. 1 team in the country that's only dropped one set all season, so we're very excited to play in that venue," said head coach Thais Baziquetto-Allen on the latest episode of "Flight Plan".

The Eagles enter the weekend at 3-5 after going 1-2 at the Mizzou Invitational, falling in four sets to Wichita State before sweeping Arkansas State and dropping a four-set decision to host Missouri. FGCU's nonconference slate has tested the Eagles against Power Four competition all season, and this weekend adds two more. Florida Gulf Coast has already faced two Big 12 programs (BYU, West Virginia) and an ACC opponent in Florida State, plus an SEC foe in Missouri, and now closes with a second ACC test in North Carolina and a Big Ten opponent in Nebraska. BYU was the Eagles' lone ranked opponent to this point; North Carolina and Nebraska make it three ranked teams on the schedule this season. FGCU has not been swept in a match this season and has won at least one set against every opponent it has faced.

Nebraska's home environment presents a new challenge for the Eagles, and coach Baziquetto-Allen has centered her team's preparation on treating the crowd as a positive rather than an obstacle. "There is a difference in the environment, not just being able to tune out, but communication is different too," Baziquetto-Allen said. "We're planning for it in practice, and at the end of the day, it's not something to be daunted by, it's something to be embraced. That's the message we're sending to our players."

Senior defensive specialist Anna Marzella said the team has embraced the challenge of a hostile building with a clear mindset. "Their fans bring an energy you don't find anywhere else, and that's something we're looking forward to," Marzella said on "Flight Plan". "We're going to step on the court with a winning mindset in every set, against North Carolina and against Nebraska. We know it's going to be a battle, but we're prepared, and we're ready to go in there and compete."

Freshman opposite Maju Hildebrand leads the Eagles with 99 kills (3.19 per set) through eight matches, including 28 over the Mizzou weekend, while senior captain Julija Grubisic Cabo has climbed to 94 kills (3.03 per set) after a 32-kill trip that included a team-high 13 kills against both Wichita State and Missouri. Sophomore Katie Gielas turned in the breakout weekend of the road trip, hitting .533 with 10 kills and four aces in the sweep of Arkansas State before adding 12 more against Missouri, while junior Camila Soto added 17 kills at the Mizzou Tournament. Senior middle blocker Abby Toeniskoetter has hit .300 or better in six straight matches, capped by a .625 clip against Missouri. Senior setter Dinara Sabitova has 211 assists on the season, and senior captain Eliska Vytiskova has added 113, including a 20-assist, 10-dig double-double against Wichita State. Freshman middle blocker Amany Kuwa leads the roster with 25 total blocks, and Marzella leads the back row with 93 digs.

No. 25 North Carolina (Saturday, Sept. 19, 1 p.m. ET)
North Carolina is 4-2 under fourth-year head coach Mike Schall and enters off a four-set road loss at undefeated Vanderbilt, hitting just .187 as a team in that match. Through six matches this season, senior Safi Hampton leads Carolina with 65 kills (3.10 points per set) and also paces the defense with 46 digs, while Jackie Taylor leads the team in both blocks (25) and service aces (nine). Hampton led the Tar Heels with 11 kills against Vanderbilt, and preseason All-ACC selection Chelsea Thorpe added nine kills on .227 hitting in that match. Taylor was North Carolina's most efficient hitter against Vanderbilt at .385 with three aces and a team-high eight total blocks, while Laynie Smith and Lauren Schutter round out the front row. The Tar Heels split setting duties between Zoe Behrendt and Emily Bobbitt, and libero Julia Bohlinger anchors the back row. North Carolina is coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and was picked fifth in the ACC preseason poll, with Thorpe and Hampton both preseason All-ACC selections.

No. 1 Nebraska (Sunday, Sept. 20, 1 p.m. ET)
Nebraska is 8-0 and was voted No. 1 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll under first-year head coach Dani Busboom Kelly, having dropped just one set all season. The Huskers are hitting .312 as a team through eight matches, ninth-best nationally, while holding opponents to .085 hitting, the top mark in the country. Sophomore middle blocker Manaia Ogbechie was named Big Ten Player of the Week after totaling 33 kills on .547 hitting with 12 blocks over a 3-0 week, and she leads the team with 27 total blocks; Andi Jackson has added 25. The Huskers enter their match with FGCU off a 3-0 sweep of in-state rival Creighton in front of a program-record crowd of 15,405 at Pinnacle Bank Arena, where Kenna Cogill was Nebraska's most efficient hitter (.727, eight kills, no errors) and Jackson added nine kills on .571 hitting. Harper Murray and Virginia Adriano round out the pin attack, while senior setter Bergen Reilly, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year and a three-time Big Ten Setter of the Year, ran the offense with 33 assists.

The Eagles close their five-match road trip in Lincoln before returning home to open ASUN play Sept. 26 against Stetson, when FGCU will raise its 2025 ASUN regular season championship banner at Alico Arena.
