Sunday showdown with LSU on deck for Eagles

FGCU looking for early season signature win

BATON ROUGE, La.- Riding the high of their first win of the 2026 season the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (1-1-1) will try to make it two in a row on Sunday as they go head-to-head with the LSU Tigers (1-2-0) in a 1 p.m. (CT) kickoff in Baton Rouge.

The Eagles finally got things going on the offensive end Thursday, scoring four times and having two other goals called back in a 4-0 victory over Southern. It was a welcome relief for FGCU who was blanked in their first two contests of the 2026 season. Ryleigh Acosta scored twice for the Blue and Green while Sarah Greiner and Kaitlin Gabelman also recorded goals, for all three it was their first tallies as Eagles.

The back line has been good for the Eagles through the first three games, allowing just two total goals and pitching a pair of shutouts. In the opener they held Houston without a shot on goal in the first half of their scoreless draw while Thursday they played a full 90 minutes without allowing Southern to record a single shot.

LSU began the season ranked in the Top 20 of the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, but dropped out after an opening week loss to #18 Wake Forest. The Tigers bounced back with a 5-0 drubbing of Northwestern State last Sunday, but dropped their second game of the season on Thursday when UCF went to Baton Rouge and escaped with a 2-1 win.

There are high expectations for LSU this season, coming off of their first Sweet 16 appearance in program history in 2025. The Tigers were picked 4th in the SEC Preseason Poll and return their leading goal scorer from a season ago in Ava Galligan who found the back of the net 11 times as a junior while also adding Allie Fryer from BYU who brings 30 career goals along with her from Provo to Baton Rouge.

Sunday's contest will be just the second all-time between the Eagles and Tigers. LSU got the better of the Eagles in a 6-1 final a season ago in Fort Myers with Galligan getting a pair of goals in the first 25 minutes to put the Bayou Bengals in the driver's seat the rest of the way.

The Eagles have four wins in program history against SEC opponents with the last coming over Alabama during the 2018 season.

Kick is set for 1 p.m. (CT) at the LSU Soccer Stadium. The game will be streamed on the SEC Network +.
