FORT MYERS, Fla.- Madara Bome made four saves and the FGCU defense stood firm to earn the Eagles a scoreless draw in their 2026 season opener against the Houston Cougars. The result is the Eagles first in program history against a Big 12 opponent.

"I'm very proud of the team's effort tonight, we played with a lot of heart" FGCU Head Coach Jim Blankenship said of the draw. "We played a good, experienced power four team and more than held our own, it was a great way to start the season" he continued.

The Eagles controlled the pace early on, pressing deep into the Houston side on a pair of occasions in the first 10 minutes of action. FGCU earned the game's first corner kick and got a shot on goal off the head of Sarah Greiner that was saved by the keeper to keep the game scoreless early on.

The ball remained in the middle third of the field for much of the next 20 minutes as neither side found space to break each other's back lines. FGCU's next shot also came from Greiner, this one from 30 yards out but was off the mark.

Florida Gulf Coast got a late corner with less than three minutes remaining in the half, but couldn't capitalize on it and the teams went to the half scoreless after 45 minutes of action.
Each side had three first half shots, but Greiner's early chance was the only one that found its way on net in the period.

The Cougars had the best scoring chance in the first 60 minutes as they connected a run down the field before Madara Bome made a spectacular save on a ball sliding towards net to keep Houston off the board.

The Eagles put some pressure on the Cougars near the 70 minute mark, earning a corner and putting back to back shots on net, but attempts by Greiner and Lexie Bennett ended up in the hands of the Houston keeper to keep it a 0-0 contest.

Bome made her fourth save of the game in the 82^nd minute to keep the game tied and FGCU found a second wind in the final stretch of the contest, sustaining the ball deep into Cougar territory, getting a shot from Bennett that hit the woodwork and drawing a corner with the final minute ticking down, but couldn't find the back of the net as the final horn sounded in a 0-0 draw.

The Eagles were outshot 13-9 on the night, but Bome's four saves earned her a piece of her 10^th career clean sheet and her fifth solo clean sheet of her career. Greiner had three of the Eagles' nine shots on the night including two of their three on net while Bennett put two towards the goal and had FGCU's other shot on target.

The ball possession in the contest was nearly split right down the middle with FGCU holding a slight 51-49% advantage. Of the Eagles 51% possession, 67% came on their attacking half of the pitch.

With the draw, the Eagles earn a result against a Big 12 opponent for the first time in program history after dropping 1-0 decisions their past two match ups.

FGCU will now hit the road for the first time this season on Sunday when they travel to Statesboro, Ga. to take on Georgia Southern who earned an opening night win over North Florida on Wednesday.
