FGCU hosts final ASUN series of the season

Eagles host hard-hitting West Georgia club that is fighting for its postseason berth

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fans of college baseball will not want to miss the upcoming Atlantic Sun Conference series between FGCU and West Georgia, which marks FGCU's final home ASUN series of the year.

This important three-game series will take place at Swanson Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida. Friday's game is set to begin at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's game will start at 5 p.m. and Sunday's game has been moved up to an 11 a.m. start with the Senior Ceremony beginning at 10:15 a.m.

  • Friday: RHP Evan Dempsey (4-2, 3.39 ERA) vs. RHP Luke Ridley (3-1, 6.33 ERA)
  • Saturday: RHP Chris Diaz (4-1, 4.09 ERA) vs. RHP Maverick Torres (2-4, 7.28 ERA)
  • Sunday: LHP Hunter Possehl (3-1, 3.48 ERA) vs. TBA

FGCU currently holds a narrow lead of just 0.5 games over Jacksonville for second place in the Atlantic Sun Conference's Graphite Division. Securing second place is crucial, as it comes with a one-round bye in the ASUN Tournament. Meanwhile, West Georgia is in the hunt for a postseason berth, adding further stakes to the series.

Evan Dempsey of FGCU stands out as a player to watch. He is a semifinalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player Award and boasts 97 strikeouts this season, ranking him 11th in the nation and leading the conference. Dempsey's impressive performance includes 97 strikeouts to just 19 walks, putting him fourth in school history for strikeouts in a season.

FGCU's batting lineup is also noteworthy, with three hitters ranked in the top 80 nationally for hits. Only Cincinnati has more players in the top 80. Javier Gorostola, ranked 21st nationally in hits, leads the ASUN in several key batting categories, including batting average (.387), hits (72), RBIs (56), and total bases (124).
