Nomination highlights their extensive commitment to community service, leadership roles; impact on team and community

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University announced Monday that student-athletes Olivia Black and CJ Smith have been named nominees for the prestigious 2026 Allstate NACDA Good Works Team. This recognition highlights student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional dedication to community service and leadership both within and beyond their sport.

The Allstate NACDA Good Works Team is a celebrated honor that acknowledges student-athletes who make a substantial impact in their communities through volunteerism and service. Being named to this watch list is a testament to the significant contributions that Black and Smith have made through their leadership roles and community involvement.

Olivia Black: A Beacon of Service and Leadership
Olivia Black, a standout student-athlete in the FGCU softball program, has earned her nomination through an extensive commitment to community service and leadership. Her involvement in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as both Community Service Chair and President has been instrumental in mobilizing the student-athlete community at FGCU to engage in impactful service initiatives.

Black's service is characterized by her proactive approach to addressing pressing community issues. Her leadership in organizing canned food drives to assist families affected by Hurricane Ian and her coordination of a bone marrow drive are just a few examples of her responsiveness to urgent needs. Furthermore, her long-term volunteer work with Golisano Children's Hospital and partnership with the American Heart Association reflect her dedication to healthcare and youth development.

A defining aspect of Black's community involvement is her work with Habitat for Humanity, where she has volunteered throughout her collegiate career. Her leadership in mobilizing her teammates to contribute to building projects has resulted in the construction of safe, stable housing for families in need. This sustained involvement underscores her commitment to creating lasting change in the Southwest Florida community.

Beyond her service efforts, Black's athletic and academic achievements further highlight her multifaceted excellence. Her record-breaking performance on the softball field, combined with her 4.0 undergraduate and graduate GPA in Forensic Studies and her ongoing pursuit of a master's degree, exemplifies her dedication to excelling in all areas of her life.

CJ Smith: Building Connections and Inspiring Change
CJ Smith, a valuable member of the FGCU men's tennis team, has made his mark through a commitment to fostering connection and support within his community. His leadership in the Team IMPACT program, particularly his role in building an ongoing relationship with honorary team member Caleb Ziegelbauer, illustrates his dedication to creating inclusive and supportive environments.

Smith's approach to service is rooted in consistency and genuine connection. His efforts go beyond organized events, emphasizing the importance of showing up and being present for others. This philosophy is mirrored in his involvement with initiatives such as Night at the Nest and Laces of Love, where he has worked to create welcoming spaces and provide essential resources to those in need.

As a SAAC representative, Smith has been pivotal in encouraging his peers to embrace community service as a shared responsibility. His leadership style prioritizes consistency and relationship-building, ensuring that service is integrated into the culture of FGCU athletics.

Academically, Smith has maintained a 3.81 GPA in Health Science while balancing the demands of his athletic commitments. His ability to manage both areas with discipline and focus reflects his work ethic and commitment to personal growth.
The Allstate NACDA Good Works Team honorees will be announced this week.
