DELAND, Fla. – Nathan Gagnon scored from second base on an RBI single from
Evan Dempsey but FGCU's offense was otherwise stymied in a 4-1 loss to Lipscomb late Thursday night in the ASUN Tournament.
The third-seeded Eagles (35-21), who played two games during the day with start times separated by 12 hours, managed only four hits against the second-seeded Bisons (27-24). The loss came in the first round of the double elimination portion of the bracket, sending FGCU to an elimination game against No. 1 seed North Florida on Friday at 10 a.m.
Gagnon was 1-for-1 in the game with a run scored while also drawing a walk and getting hit by a pitch. Dempsey drove in Gagnon with a single in the top of the eighth while
Wilfred Gonzalez and
Jeremy Comer each recorded a hit in the game as well.
Chris Diaz (5-2) was charged with the loss after pitching 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out three batters and issuing four walks.
Mattox Meeks entered in relief, contributing 1 2/3 innings, where he surrendered three hits and two earned runs, with one strikeout and no walks.
Jordan Vera closed out with a strong performance, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing no hits, no walks, and one strikeout. Vera's efficient outing required only 15 pitches, 11 of which were strikes.
Lipscomb took the lead in the third inning when Aaron Stelogeannis scored on a groundout by Jordan Thomas after advancing on a double by Cam Pruitt. The score stood at 1-0.
In the fifth inning, Lipscomb extended its lead with three runs. Cam Pruitt hit an RBI double, driving in Aaron Stelogeannis from first base. Jordan Thomas followed with an RBI single, bringing Pruitt home. A double by Kai Holm scored Thomas, making it 4-0 in favor of Lipscomb.
Now the Eagles will face an Osprey team that is the top seed in the tournament and won four out of six games against FGCU during the regular season. North Florida fell to No. 4 seed North Alabama, 6-1, earlier on Thursday.
