JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast had four baseball players honored as
Logan Baisley,
Jaret Nelson,
Ashton Pocol and
Hunter Possehl were named to the Atlantic Sun Conference's All-Academic Team on Monday.
The four honorees from FGCU mark the most the baseball program has ever had since joining the conference in 2007-08.
Jaret Nelson finished the regular season with 64 hits, 37 hits, 12 doubles and one of four Eagles with 10-or-more home runs (15). He drew 35 walks, stole 13 bases while recording a .533 slugging percentage and .436 on-base percentage. His .322 batting average, his .969 OPS and his 64 hits are the highest among first basemen in the ASUN.
Ashton Pocol recorded five saves and posted a 3-4 record in 35 1/3 innings on the mound, recorded a 3.26 earned run average and a 0.99 WHIP with 46 strikeouts while only allowing 10 walks and 20 hits. Opposing batters only hit .187 against Pocol during the regular season. All five saves came in ASUN play and four of his five saves were against teams with winning records.
One of three FGCU pitchers in the top seven in the ASUN in ERA,
Hunter Possehl posted a 4-1 record with a 3.41 ERA in 63 1/3 innings pitched during the regular season. He struck out 62 batters while only issuing 23 walks and allowed 57 hits while making 13 starts in 14 appearances. Possehl's 2.35 ERA in conference games leads the ASUN and his 12 earned runs allowed in conference games is the fewest of any ASUN pitcher.
Logan Baisley recorded 11 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings pitched on the year, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits.
To be eligible for the ASUN All-Academic Team, undergraduate student-athletes must have a cumulative 3.50 GPA, have participated in 50% of contests during the season (pitchers must have a minimum of 10 innings pitched), have completed four (4) semesters of college coursework OR 50% of progress towards a degree and have one year of residence at the institution. Student-athletes in post-graduate programs must have a cumulative 3.50 GPA and have participated in 50% of contests during the season.
The Eagles recently earned the No. 3 seed in the ASUN Tournament and will open tournament play on Wednesday, May 20 at 6 p.m., facing the winner of the Central Arkansas vs. Stetson opening round matchup.
