FORT MYERS, Fla. – After more than a week on the road, facing weather delays and cancellations, FGCU finally returns home to Swanson Stadium to host an Atlantic Sun Conference series against a hot Jacksonville team that has won four of its past five games, including an upset over No. 21 Florida.
The series begins on Friday with FGCU's Strike Out Cancer game at 6:30 p.m., where members of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority are selling raffle tickets to help raise money in the fight against cancer. The series continues on Saturday at 5 p.m. before wrapping up on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets remain
available for purchase by clicking here.
Jacksonville (15-17, 4-8 ASUN) used that 4-3 win over the 21
st-ranked Gators on Mar. 31 to bust out of a slump. Prior to their victory in Gainesville, the Dolphins had lost five of six games, but that win over the Gators turned their fortunes around. Now they take that momentum into Fort Myers, where FGCU (20-11, 6-5) is prepared to reignite some Swanson magic. The Eagles are currently 15-3 at home this year.
FGCU returns home as one of the hottest-hitting teams in the country, ranking third nationally in hits (371) and fourth in batting average (.331).
Javier Gorostola is currently second in the nation in hits (56) and looks to return to the top while
Jon Embury (51) ranks 10th and
Wilfred Gonzalez (48) ranks 34
th. Among ASUN players, the trio ranks 1-2-3.
That hitting prowess will be tested against a JU team that leads the ASUN and ranks 85
th nationally in shutouts and third in the ASUN in ERA (5.23).
However, that ERA mark remains below FGCU's 5.04 team ERA, a number that leads the conference. Friday's projected starter,
Evan Dempsey, leads the ASUN and is eighth nationally in strikeouts, with 68 to his credit this year.
