TAMPA, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast (8-13) fell to No. 70 University of South Florida (8-13) with a final score of 4-0 on Friday evening at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
South Florida secured the doubles point with victories on the first two courts. At No. 1 doubles, Toto Llanes and James Newton defeated
Tanner Povey and
CJ Smith, 6-2. The doubles point was clinched at No. 2 doubles, where Ettore Danesi and Gughi Verdese overcame
Jonathan Baron and
Mika Bunjes, 6-2. The match at No. 3 doubles, featuring
Stefan Correa and
Stavros Hadjivarnava against Timeo Gaillard and Max Mroz, was left unfinished with a score of 5-3.
In singles play, the Bulls extended their lead with three straight-set victories. At No. 6 singles, Max Mroz was awarded the win by default against the Green & Blue. South Florida then added points at No. 1 and No. 5 singles. Hugo Car secured a 6-4, 6-4 win over Povey at No. 1 singles, and Newton defeated Smith 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, finalizing the dual match score at 4-0.
The remaining singles matches were left unfinished, with the Eagles unable to register a point. Bunjes was trailing Elijah Cham at No. 2 singles 4-6, 0-5, while Correa's match against Stepan Mruzek at No. 3 singles was at one set apiece, 4-6, 6-4. Hadjivarnava was battling Gaillard at No. 4 singles, trailing 2-6, 3-5 before play was halted.
This wrapped up the regular season for the Eagles, who will now turn their attention to the ASUN Tournament, set for Apr. 14-18 at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers.
