VALDOSTA, Ga. -Â The Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf team has put together one of its most impressive seasons in recent memory, and now comes the chance to make history. The Eagles will make the trip north to Valdosta, Georgia to compete in the ASUN Championship on April 21-23 at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, with a chance to capture the program's first conference championship on the line.
The Eagles will be represented by
Nolan Harper,
Sebastian Gamboa,
Sacha Ruiz,
Brett Moore and
Christian Figueredo, with
Brody Stevenson serving as the sixth man. Kinderlou Forest Golf Club plays as a par 72 at 7,517 yards.
FGCU enters the week as one of the stronger programs in the field, ranked No. 59 in the country, the highest of any ASUN school. Stetson (No. 74) and North Alabama (No. 96) are the only other conference programs inside the top 100. The rest of the field includes Austin Peay, Bellarmine, Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville, Lipscomb, North Florida, Queens-Charlotte and West Georgia.
The Eagles carry significant momentum into the championship after a season that has produced seven top-5 finishes, five top-3 finishes, two team championships and two individual championships.
The most recent outing came at the Giles-Spratley Collegiate at Independence Golf Club, where FGCU finished second overall at 16-under par in a 14-team field. Ruiz stole the show, capturing his first collegiate individual championship after finishing tied for first at 9-under par. Harper added a tie for ninth at 4-under, and Gamboa landed in a tie for 17th at 2-under. Figueredo finished tied for 27th at 1-over, with Moore rounding out the lineup in a tie for 65th at 9-over. Stevenson, competing as an individual, finished tied for 68th at 10-over.
Harper leads the way individually for the Eagles, ranked No. 150 nationally with an adjusted scoring average of 70.0 and three top-10 finishes this season. The sophomore made program history at the Ka'anapali Classic in Hawaii, where his second-round 63 (-8) tied the program's all-time single-round best, a mark he shares with teammate Moore, and his 54-hole total of 197 (-16) tied the program's all-time 54-hole scoring record, previously set by former Eagle and current PGA Tour member Frankie Capan III.
Gamboa has been nearly as sharp, sitting at No. 265 nationally with a 70.9 adjusted scoring average, two top-5 finishes and an individual championship at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational this season. Ruiz has also had a standout year, ranking No. 274 with a 70.7 adjusted scoring average, three top-10 finishes and an individual title at the Giles-Spratley Collegiate.
Moore carries a 71.8 adjusted scoring average and owns one top-10 finish this season, while Figueredo checks in at 72.7 with one top-10 finish as well. Stevenson rounds out the group with a 73.8 adjusted scoring average and one top-15 finish this season.
The Eagles also have a recent blueprint for success at Kinderlou Forest. At last year's ASUN Championship on the same course, FGCU finished third, with Gamboa tying for second at 8-under and Harper tying for sixth at 6-under. Harper, Gamboa, Moore, Figueredo and Stevenson all have experience competing at this event, giving the Eagles a familiarity with the course that could prove valuable down the stretch.
The Eagles will get their championship run underway Tuesday morning, with Figueredo leading off at 8:50 a.m., followed by Moore at 9:00 a.m., Ruiz at 9:10 a.m.,  Gamboa at 9:20 a.m. and Harper rounding out the group at 9:30 a.m.
