FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast beach volleyball (11-8) went 2-0 at the Urban Buzz Eagle Invitational on Friday, defeating FIU 4-1 and sweeping Sam Houston 5-0.
"I felt really good to play in front of our amazing fans at FGCU," head coach Chris Sweat said. "Having the crowd be so energetic was awesome to see, and I know the players were all feeding off of it. It was great to get a win against a very talented FIU team and we're looking forward to some more great matches tomorrow."
Kaitlyn Beck earned her 75th career win against FIU with
Kristina Gluc, winning 21-15, 21-14.
Emma Soncrant and
Vanessa Moriarty got FGCU started with a 21-19, 21-11 win, and
Nicole De Oliveira and
Erin Miller secured the Eagles' victory with a 21-17, 21-10 win on court 2.
The Eagles cruised to a 5-0 win over Sam Hosuton (1-12) in the afternoon session. All five pairs won in two sets, including a 21-6, 21-12 win from
Sydney Majick and
Andrea Dietz and a 21-14, 21-5 win for Moriarty and Gluc.
Next, FGCU will host its senior day match at 10 a.m. against Palm Beach State before taking on Jacksonville at 2 p.m. Senior day ceremonies are scheduled for 9:45 a.m.
