DeLAND, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast beach volleyball (8-6) swept its Friday slate at the Stetson Tournament, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-1 and North Alabama 3-2.
"We knew the competition this weekend would be very deep, so it was great to get two wins against two very quality opponents," head coach Chris Sweat said. "Different pairs showed up at different times, which was nice to see. With three talented opponents tomorrow, we'll be looking to carry that momentum as we hit the midway point of our season."
The Eagles swept the season series with the Islanders after winning 3-2 at the TCU Tournament a week prior. In the second meeting, FGCU controlled the match en route to its 4-1 win.
Andrea Dietz and
Sydney Majick started their 2-0 day with a 21-15, 21-16 win at the No. 3 pair for FGCU's first victory.
Emma Soncrant and
Vanessa Moriarty won 21-14, 23-21 and
Alexis Keeter and
Ava Lilliquist won 22-20, 24-22 to secure the victory.
Kaitlyn Beck and
Kristina Gluc closed out the fourth match win with a 28-26, 21-9 win for FGCU.
In the second contest of the day,
Erin Miller and
Nicole De Oliveira cruised to a 21-8, 21-10 win at the No. 2 pair. The Lions took a 2-1 lead, finishing on top at courts 1 and 5 with two matches still to go. Beck and
Elaina Millaway battled to a 21-17, 24-22 win to level the match at 2-2. The only pair to go three sets in either match, Dietz and Majick rallied to win 14-21, 21-11, 15-7 and give FGCU the conference victory.
Next, FGCU will play its lone tripleheader of the regular season on Saturday against UAB, Southern Miss and No. 15 Stetson.
