Eagles rally for 4-2 victory over UNC Greensboro

FGCU to open ASUN play at Queens Sunday morning

GREENSBORO, N.C. – FGCU never blinked after opening up Saturday afternoon's tennis match at UNC Greensboro with a two-point deficit, rallying back for a 4-2 win for the first win over the Spartans in program history.

UNCG (2-7) claimed the early lead after a dramatic doubles point. The Spartans struck first in doubles as Lars Frafjord and Tymofiy Khrystyuk took a 6-3 win against Mika Bunjes and Gustav Hasslegren at No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Stefan Correa and Pablo Paternostro had a slight edge at 6-5, and were inching towards evening the doubles competition but the Spartan tandem of John Gabelic and Devon Moskowtiz raced past with a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Jonathan Baron and Tanner Povey.

Gabelic then was the first to strike in singles play, notching a 6-1, 6-2 win over Paternostro at No. 2 singles. The celebrations for the Spartans did not last long.

At No. 5 singles, Gustav Hasslegren handed William Elmers his fourth straight loss with a 6-4, 6-1 decision to put the Eagles on the board. Bunjes then evened the match score with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hector Nissen at No. 4 singles.

Povey gave FGCU its first lead of the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Tymofiy Khrystyuk as Povey moved to 9-8 on the season in singles action. Then Correa clinched the match win for the Eagles at No. 6 singles, posting the 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Eric Lindemann.
