CHARLOTTE – Florida Gulf Coast opened Atlantic Sun Conference play Sunday in Charlotte, cruising past Queens to a 4-0 win.
Winners of three straight to conclude their long road swing, FGCU (4-8, 1-0 ASUN) notched its first sweep over Queens (0-7, 0-1) in program history in getting league play off to a good start. It marked the first time FGCU has won its conference opener since 2023.
"It was a very good weekend for the guys," said FGCU head coach
Josh Molino. "They have been working hard and fighting through a very challenging schedule. To win three in a row on consecutive days says a lot about their heart and the character of this group. We are looking forward to the home opener on Wednesday and defending The Nest."
Florida Gulf Coast secured the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. The duo of
Mika Bunjes and
Gustav Hasslegren earned a 6-3 win over the Royals' Tanner Cooley and Filippo Scala at No. 2 doubles to even the battle for the doubles point. Then at No. 3 doubles,
Stefan Correa and
Stavros Hadjivarnava clinched the point with a 6-4 win against Hamilton Huitt and Diego Jimenez, handing the Queens No. 3 doubles team its first loss of the season. QUC took No. 1 doubles, as Alex Morris and Noe Villen defeated
Jonathan Baron and
Tanner Povey, 6-4.
In singles play, the Eagles rolled to the sweep with a series of straight-set victories. At No. 5 singles, Correa defeated Mark Agafanov with a 6-2, 6-4 result to move to 7-6 on the year. On court one, Povey added another point, overcoming Villen 6-0, 6-3 to claim a team-leading 10
th singles win of the season. Hasslegren then secured the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Scala at No. 4 singles.
FGCU now returns to Fort Myers for its long-awaited home opener on Wednesday when the Eagles host Mercer (3-5).
