FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast men's basketball (10-15, 4-8 ASUN) returns to Alico Arena to begin a four-game homestand against North Florida (6-19, 4-8 ASUN) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11.
The last time out, JR Konieczny led FGCU with 20 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and a steal against Bellarmine.
Jordan Ellerbee was the only other Eagle to score in double-digits with 12 points.
Malone added one block on Saturday to move into a tie for the fifth-most in a single season by an Eagle with 47. His next two blocks will tie him for fourth & third in program history, respectively, and he's five blocks away from the second-best blocking season in FGCU history.
North Florida enters at 6-19, with all four of its Division I wins coming in ASUN play. The Ospreys split their most recent weekend series, winning 81-73 at West Georgia but falling 91-72 at Queens. The other ASUN wins for UNF came at home over Bellarmine on January 24, 117-114 in overtime and against EKU on January 22, 87-85. North Florida also tallied a road win, 105-91 over North Alabama, on January 15.Â
The Ospreys take and make a high volume of 3-point shots. Their 11.8 made 3-pointers per game ranks fourth nationally while their 32.4 3-point attempts per game ranks seventh nationally; both marks lead the ASUN. North Florida also makes their free throws, shooting 78.4% from the line, the 11th best mark in the country.Â
UNF has two players averaging double-digit scoring, led by Kamrin Oriol, who averages 20.8 points and 4.5 assists per game. Oriol shoots 48.4% from the field, 41.7% from 3-point range (ranks 35th nationally) and 90% from the free throw line. Kent Jackson scores 15.0 points per game and records 1.1 steals per game for North Florida. Jackson and Oriol lead the charge from behind the arc, having combined to shoot 423 3-pointers, making 167 of them. The conference's top 3-point shooters, Jackson's 89 3-point makes ranks third nationally and Oriol follows with 78 makes, which ranks 20th in the NCAA. Dalton Gayman and Mason Lee each grab 5.2 rebounds per game; the Ospreys average 1.5 blocks per game as a team.
FGCU leads the all-time series 24-17; the Eagles and Ospreys have met every year FGCU has been in Division I excluding the COVID-19 affected 2020-21 campaign. The Eagles are 5-1 in the
Pat Chambers era and have won the last three games in a row. The last time the two squads met,
Michael Duax helped FGCU to an 86-82 senior night win with a 10 point, 12 rebound double-double.
