FORT MYERS, Fla. — Florida Gulf Coast (3-1) defeated Florida A&M (0-1) ,4-1, on Friday at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Eagles captured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. In singles, the Eagles secured straight-set wins at the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 positions to clinch the match.
FGCU secured the doubles point with victories on courts one and two.
Anjali Kotecha and
Nora Svensson delivered a 6-1 win over Larissa Silva and Genesis Whitelock at No. 1 doubles. The duo of
June Bjork and
Africa Burillo followed with a 6-3 triumph against Luiza Eidelvein and Veronica Rodriguez at No. 2 doubles. The match at No. 3 doubles was left unfinished with the score tied at 5-5.
"The ladies competed hard today," FGCU head coach
Courtney Vernon said after the win. "We are looking forward to another challenge awaiting us on Sunday."
In singles, Kotecha extended the lead for the Eagles with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Reagan Harris at No. 3 singles. Burillo added another point for the hosts, defeating Silva 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Svensson clinched the win for the Green & Blue at No. 1 singles by overcoming Rodriguez 6-3, 6-1.
The match at No. 2 singles between
Ashley Matz and Whitelock was left unfinished, tied at 6-4, 3-3. Additionally, Cecili Johannessen Maeland's match at No. 4 singles against Sydney Brantley was also left unfinished, with Johannessen Maeland leading 7-5, 3-2. Florida A&M secured their sole singles win at No. 6 singles, where Alyynah Thomas claimed a point against the Eagles.
Up next for the Green & Blue is a home match against Middle Tennessee on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.
