FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University's baseball team will be back in action Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. as it begins a seven-game stretch at Swanson Stadium with a single game against FIU.
This will be the second of what amounts to back-to-back home games against FIU for the Eagles. The Green and Blue took on the Panthers last Tuesday at Swanson with the Eagles earning a 13-3 victory in eight innings. The Eagles trailed in that game 3-2 after the top of the fifth but scored 11 unanswered runs to pull away for the victory.
Patience at the plate was a key to FGCU's victory over the Panthers. FGCU drew eight walks in the contest, the second-most in a game this season after earning nine in a win over Stony Brook Feb. 23. FGCU's final two runs against the Panthers came via free passes with the bases loaded to
Jake McKee and
Mac Moise.
FGCU will be looking to bounce back after a series sweep at the hands of Jacksonville last weekend in the northeast corner of the state. Friday was FGCU's best chance to pull out a victory as
Evan Dempsey worked seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while fanning nine. The Dolphins were able to manufacture three runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull out a 3-0 victory.
FIU is also looking to rebound after being swept by Kennesaw State last weekend in Georgia. Going back to last Tuesday's contest against the Eagles, FIU has allowed double-digit runs in three of its last four contests.
FIU is one of the longest-standing Division I rivals for the Eagles. The teams have met 27 times on the diamond, with the first meeting taking place Feb. 27, 2008. The Eagles won that game 13-1 and hold a 17-10 advantage in the all-time series entering Tuesday. The sides have played twice this year already, with FGCU taking the victory in both contests.
Following Tuesday's game, the Eagles will continue their seven-game homestand this Friday as Queens University of Charlotte makes its first visit to Swanson Stadium in program history. First pitch in the three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series is set for 6:30 p.m., with Saturday's game slated for 2 p.m. and Sunday set for 1 p.m. For tickets, visit the FGCU Ticket Office online by clicking the available
