Florida Gulf Coast University baseball was blanked 8-0 on Thursday by Richard Long and Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Eagles' offense was nearly non-existent in game one, registering only three hits against Long. FGCU put up 13 runs just two nights ago against FIU.Â
Mac Moise hit a leadoff double in the second inning, but the Eagles would go hitless until the eighth. Jon Embury and Cayden Hessemyer produced back-to-back infield singles in the eighth. The Eagles would leave the bases juiced in the frame.
Thursday's shutout marked just the fourth time this season in which a team has held FGCU scoreless, the first time in 10 games.
Jacksonville figured out Chris Diaz, FGCU's Friday night starter, in the second inning with a five-spot. The Dolphins scored five runs on three hits in the inning. Diaz stayed in the game, went four innings and struck out five.
Logan Baisley pitched the remaining four innings out of the pen in relief, keeping the game within reach by only surrendering two runs on four hits. Long, the ASUN Preseason Pitcher of the Year, nearly pitched a complete game for JU. He tossed a scoreless eight innings to pick up his fifth win of the year, but only struck out one Eagle as FGCU made consistent contact.
JU added its fourth run in the third and pushed across two more in the seventh to its inevitable 8-0 victory. The Dolphins tallied 11 hits Thursday. Ten of their 11 hits were singles. JU has now defeated the Eagles in back-to-back games after losing eight straight before that in the series.
In the loss, FGCU falls to 15-22 overall and 6-10 in the ASUN. The Eagles aim to even up the series on Friday night in game two. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
