Florida Gulf Coast University baseball was shut out by Jacksonville once again on Friday, falling in game two 3-0 in Jacksonville, Florida.
Friday's shutout loss marked the first time this season and in program history in which the Eagles have gone scoreless in back-to-back games. The Eagles dropped game one 8-0 and have been outscored in the series 11-0. FGCU falls to 15-23 overall and 6-11 in ASUN play. FGCU looks to avoid the series sweep on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
In Thursday's game one, FGCU managed to record three hits. On Friday in game two, the Eagles mustered up four in a pitcher's ballpark, which happens to be 340 down both lines and 405 in dead center. The Eagles made contact a few times that would have appeared to be home runs in Fort Myers, but ended up being long outs in Jacksonville. Cayden Hessemyer was the lone bright spot for the Eagles' offense, going 2-for-4 Friday trying to even up the series.
Evan Dempsey pitched lights out. Dempsey threw over 100 pitches in seven scoreless frames, striking out one short of a career-high 10 batters. He retired 16 batters in a row during a dominant stretch on Friday, getting JU hitters to chase his movement. Dempsey allowed just four hits and walked only one.
Over his last four outings in conference play, he has struck out 30 batters and surrendered just two runs in 26 innings of work, but has just one win to show for his efforts.
Dempsey's outing was wasted by the FGCU bullpen. With his night done in the eighth, it didn't take long for Jacksonville to score its three runs in the frame. FGCU managed to bring the tying run up to the plate in the ninth, but ended the game with a strikeout, a popup and a groundout.
