Florida Gulf Coast University beach volleyball team is this year's Capri Classic Champions. The tournament was hosted by No. 15 Florida Atlantic and FGCU defeated the Owl 4-1 Saturday afternoon to lift the crown in Boca Raton, Florida.
The Green & Blue first handed UTEP a 5-0 sweep to earn a spot in the championship match.
FGCU got to work quickly against host FAU (14-13), jumping out an early 2-0 advantage when
Jaci Carpenter and
Emma Soncrant easily won 21-9, 21-14 on court No. 3.
Andrea Dietz and
Mia Thompson then delivered a 22-20, 21-14 victory on court No. 4.
Sydney Majick and
Erin Miller then not only clinched the match but gave FGCU the championship title with a 21-13, 15-21, 15-11 battle on court No. 5.
Alexis Keeter and
Ava Lilliquist battled through three sets but ultimately fell 22-20, 14-21, 15-13 on court No. 2.
Nicole De Oliveira and
Kaitlyn Luebbers got the Eagles' final point with a hard fought 22-20, 23-25, 15-12 victory on court No. 1.
Saturday's upset victory is the second time FGCU has toppled the Owls in the last six matchups and just the third time in the last 13 battles.
In the earlier match Dietz and Thompson won 21-17, 21-14 on court No. 4 before Keeter and Lilliquist pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 21-17, 21-15 win on court No. 2. Carpenter and Soncrant sealed the victory from court 3 with a 21-16, 22-20 showing.
Majick and Miller added the fourth point with 21-15, 21-16 winning scores on No. 5 and De Oliveira and Luebbers wrapped up the sweep victory on court No. 1 winning 21-16, 15-21, 15-6.
FGCU is now 18-10 overall and will next head to the Palmetto Open hosted by South Carolina Friday.
