Eagles make it a perfect weekend at ASUN Mid-Season, Luebbers sets program wins record

The Florida Gulf Coast University beach volleyball team made it a perfect weekend at the Atlantic Sun Conference Mid-Season Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. Saturday. The Eagles downed North Alabama 4-1 and Austin Peay 5-0 on day two of the event, after beating Central Arkansas and Eastern Kentucky on day one. FGCU dropped just two counting matches across the competition. Kaitlyn Luebbers earned her 85th career win, breaking the program record she tied on Friday when she matched Kacie Johnson's 84.

Each of the Eagles' four victories in their morning matchup against the Lions came in two sets. Erin Miller and Sydney Majick took their first frame 21-16 before battling for a 24-22 win in the second to give FGCU the lead at the No. 5 pair. Andrea Dietz and Mia Thompson added to that advantage at the No. 4 pair with a comfortable 21-17, 21-11 triumph.

Jaci Carpenter and Emma Soncrant clinched the match for FGCU at the No. 3 pair. Their hard-fought win came in the first set, taking it 24-22 before cruising 21-11 in the second. Alexis Keeter and Ava Lilliquist made it four straight for the Eagles at the No. 2 with a 21-18, 21-13 victory. The only defeat the Green and Blue took came in three sets at the No. 1, which proved to be the only defeat of the day for FGCU.

The Eagles were even more dominant in their afternoon contest against the Governors. FGCU's bottom four pairs stayed together in the afternoon match, and they all ended up on the plus side of two-set decisions. Miller and Majick cruised 21-12, 21-10 at the No. 5 to set the tone. Dietz and Thompson followed with a win of their own at the No. 4, 21-14, 21-18.

Carpenter and Soncrant kept the Eagles rolling at the No. 3 with FGCU's most lopsided triumph of the weekend, 21-11, 21-5 to clinch the match. Keeter and Lilliquist added a 21-8, 21-12 victory at the No. 2.

The Preseason All- ASUN duo of Kaitlyn Luebbers and Nicole De Oliveira stepped into the No. 1 pair and took their only match of the day 21-12, 21-11 for her Luebbers' 85th career win.

FGCU (11-9, 5-2 ASUN) extended its win streak to six games with its four victories at the ASUN Mid-Season Tournament. The Eagles' next opportunity comes next weekend at the Panther Pompano Classic in Pompano Beach, Fla. hosted by Florida International University on April 4 and 5.
