The Florida Gulf Coast University women's golf team placed fifth out of 12 teams at the Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State University, with the first two rounds played Monday and the third contested Tuesday.
Lousiane Gauthier was FGCU's highest finisher in the individual standings, tying for 12th in a field of 70.
The Eagles ended the first round in fifth place on the team leaderboard, shooting +12 (296). FGCU was paced by Gauthier and
Posie Farrelly, who both finished the first 18 holes at +2 (73) and tied for 9th individually.
The scores got lower across the board in the second round. The Eagles shot +6 (290), but despite improving their opening round score by six strokes, ended seventh among the 12 squads. FGCU had two in the top 10 of the individual standings in round 2. Gauthier shot -2 (69), which tied for fifth, and
Islay Benoit finished at even par (71) to tie for tenth.
Through day one, the Eagles found themselves in fifth place at +18 (586), behind Texas Tech, Notre Dame, South Alabama and Kennesaw State. Gauthier was tied for fourth after 36 holes at even par (142), one of just six players to shoot par or better on Monday. Benoit tied for 17th at +5 (147) and Farrelly followed at +6 (148) in a tie for 23rd.
Scores rose throughout the field in the third round. FGCU shot +21 (305), the eighth best mark of the day to cement their fifth-place finish overall at +37 (889). The Eagles overtook Kennesaw State but fell behind Louisiana Monroe across the final 18 holes. They also slotted behind Texas Tech, who won the event, South Alabama and Notre Dame.
Benoit paced FGCU Tuesday with a +4 (75) and tied for 19th place in the third round. Benoit finished +9 (222) overall, tying for 18th and second among the Eagles' competitors. Gauthier posted FGCU's best overall mark at +7 (220). The junior finished in a tie for 12th place, just two strokes outside the top 10. Farrelly made it a trio of Eagles to place in the top half of the individual leaderboard. The senior's +13 (226) was good enough for 28th place in a pack of 70.
FGCU was one of two teams with multiple eagles throughout the event.
Amelie Alcantara finished the par five seventh hole in three in the first round, and
Leonie Wulfers picked up hers at the par four sixth hole in the third round.Â
FGCU is back in action next week. The Eagles travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to contest the Furman/UNF Invitational hosted by Furman University and the University of North Florida on March 31 and April 1.
