Eagles take first at Spring Break Invitational

The Florida Gulf Coast University women's golf team wrapped up the Spring Invitational on Tuesday afternoon, finishing the event in first place out of 13 teams. The event was hosted by Western Kentucky at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club, and the Eagles shot a three-round total of 866 to win the event in Dade City, Fla.

FGCU found themselves tied with Illinois for the lead after shooting a ten-over par (294) in the first round before shaving four strokes off the team score in the second answer. The Eagles turned in their best performance of the tournament in the final round, shooting an even 284, while Illinois shot 11-over par to help FGCU grab the win by seven strokes.

Senior Posie Farrelly paced the Eagles, finishing in third place individually behind a total of 214 for the tournament. Her first round score of 76 was good enough to put her in fourth place, but she followed with back-to-back match-low rounds of 69 and picked up seven birdies in the final round to end in the top three.

Teammate Amelie Alcantara followed in sixth place on the final leaderboard, as her rounds of 70/75/71 totaled 216. Junior Louisiane Gauthier shot a 73 to open the tournament before turning in two rounds of 72 to total 217 and land in third place.

FGCU's Islay Benoit improved in each round, shooting 78/73/72 to end with a score of 223 in 12th place, giving the Eagles a third of the top dozen finishers.

The Eagles are back in action on March 24, when they open the two-day Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State.
