The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team was shut out 10-0 in a run-rule loss in conference action on Saturday night against Stetson University in DeLand, Florida.
FGCU looked to strike first when
Javier Gorostola tripled with one out in the top of the first but was left stranded as back-to-back outs followed to end the inning
Stetson (10-10, 1-1 ASUN) in the bottom of the fourth plated five runs on a pair of hits while taking advantage of two FGCU errors. The Hatters later added a pair of runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to go up 8-0.
Stetson then pushed two more runs across in the eighth to secure a run-rule victory.
Jon Embury ended the Eagle's hitless drought when he singled with one down in the eighth.
The Hatters' pitching kept the Eagles (8-10, 1-1 ASUN) off balance all game as it allowed two hits and a walk.
FGCU starter
Jordan Vera took the loss on the mound. He went three and two-thirds allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out two.
Outside of Gorostola and Embury reaching base off a triple and single, teammate
Aidan Corn tallied the team's only walk.
The Eagles look to bounce back tomorrow in the third game of the series against Stetson. First pitch is set for noon.
