Florida Gulf Coast Univerity baseball won a wild Atlantic Sun Conference opener Friday, 14-12, against Stetson University in DeLand, Florida.
The ASUN opener witnessed a combined 28 hits and 26 runs scored with FGCU jumping out to 9-0 lead. The Eagles also lead by as many as 10 on Friday.
FGCU scored five in the second and four runs in the third and appeared to be on its way to another run-rule victory, leading 9-0 though three innings of play. Robert Moya scored the game's first run with a solo shot, his fourth round tripper of the year. Tyler Herb fought off a pitch for a two-run single, and Aidan Corn sent the second FGCU ball over the fence with a two-run blast to complete the five spot.
Jake Mummau capped the four-run third with an RBI double down the right field line. FGCU would need Mummau to come up big later in the contest. Stetson added its first two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut into the deficit, 9-2. Harrison Povey robbed the Hatters of their third run with an extended leaping catch over the wall in center field.
In the fifth, Jaiver Gorostola sent a pitch right back up the middle to plate two more FGCU runs, making it 12-2 in favor of the Eagles. FGCU would not score again until the ninth, giving way to Stetson scoring eight unanswered runs to pull with two, 12-10, though six complete. The Hatters connected on a grand slam in the sixth.
Mummau showed off some nine-hole power in the ninth with his first home run of the year. He turned on a pitch and bent the ball around the foul pole, providing FGCU a four-run cushion. Stetson pushed across two runs the home half of the ninth hoping to force extras, but Mummau's two-run shot in the top of the inning proved to be the difference for the Eagles' fourth straight win.
FGCU's 7-8-9 hitters combined for eight hits and 10 RBIs Friday. Corn produced four RBIs, while Herb and Mummau each had three. Four Eagles had a multi-hit night as Herb and Muammau led the way with three hits apiece. Muammu was a triple away from the cycle, and Moya recorded two of FGCU's four homers.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
