Maria Angelino hit a walk-off two-run home run in a 2-0 win over the College of Charleston before Florida Gulf Coast University softball dropped a 3-1 decision against Mercer at the Dugout Club Classic in Tallahassee, Fla. on Saturday.
Allison Sparkman entered the circle for FGCU, tying her career-high in strikeouts with six. The sophomore only allowed four base runners in the complete game win.
The Eagles managed to load the bases in the first inning against the Cougars with one out recorded after three walks and three stolen bases. FGCU was not able to convert, remaining scoreless.
The Cougars' pitcher faced the minimum for the next five innings, only allowing one hit. In the seventh,
Tiffany Meek reached on an error and swiped second before Angelino sent the ball over the left field wall for the walk-off.
The Green and Blue bounced back immediately to face Mercer. The Bears did not score with a hit, scoring on a wild pitch, passed ball and error by the second baseman to score all three of their runs.
The Eagles got runners on base in the fifth, looking to comeback from a 3-0 deficit.
Sophie Wylie led off the inning with a walk before Angelino laced a double to advance Wylie to third.
Maddox Thomas came on in pinch hitting duties and drove in Wylie as every runner moved up on base.
Avery Viancos reentered and stole second. With the tying run in scoring position, the next two batters couldn't get a hit, surrendering the best opportunity to tie it up before the eventual 3-1 loss.
The Green and Blue return home for a split doubleheader against Saint Francis and FIU on Tuesday.
