Baseball prepares for Hurricanes and Dawgs

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University baseball makes its pilgrimage across Alligator Alley this Wednesday to face the Miami Hurricanes at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra in Coral Gables, Florida. After Miami, FGCU will play a four-game series against No. 6 Georgia in Athens, Georgia.

FGCU (4-3) completed the series sweep of Stony Brook on Sunday, scoring six unanswered runs to win 10-6. Javier Gorostola drove in the go-ahead run Sunday and finished the series 7-of-13 at the plate. Goronstola leads the teams in both hits (12) and RBIs (12), accompanied by a .414 average. Sluggers Robert Moya and Harrison Povey have hit multiple home runs this season (2) for the Eagles.

After dropping three consecutive games, FGCU has won three straight and will play their first true road game of the season. All seven games in 2025 have been played at Swanson Stadium.

FGCU has won the last two meetings against Miami. Last time in Coral Gables (2024), FGCU pulled off an extra-inning upset, scoring four runs in the top of the 12th to win 12-10. The Eagles scored three in the top of the eighth to take an 8-7 lead, but the Hurricanes answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to inevitably send the game to extras. FGCU recorded 18 hits in the 2024 midweek win.

In 2022, FGCU won 7-3 to avoid a series sweep. Prior to the last two victories, FGCU had lost 10 straight and the Eagles are 7-27 all-time in the series that dates back to 2008. Five of the seven wins for FGCU have occurred in Coral Gables.

Miami is 7-1 this season, sweeping both Niagara and Princeton. The Hurricanes' lone loss came against Florida Atlantic in a Tuesday midweek game, 2-1, in Boca Raton, Florida. Miami earned votes in last week's NCBWA Top 25 Poll, and the Hurricanes were picked to finish 11th in the ACC Preseason Poll.

FGCU will face Georgia (9-1) for the first time in program history on Friday. The first pitch between the Eagles and the Dawgs is scheduled for 3 p.m. on SEC Network+. The series finale is Sunday at 1 p.m. after Saturday's 2 p.m. doubleheader. Friday will mark the first time that FGCU has played an SEC team other than Florida, in which the Eagles are 8-14 all-time. Georgia went 43-17 a season ago and hosted a super regional.

The last time FGCU took down a ranked opponent was 2023. The Eagles won the series at No. 16 Florida State, taking two games out of three.
