FORT MYERS, Fla. –
Avery Viancos recorded her 100th career hit as an Eagle on Saturday in the 2-1 win over Wisconsin. Viancos is the 34th player in FGCU's history to reach the milestone and the 24th player in FGCU's DI history to reach 100 hits.
The Green and Blue (5-7) dropped the second game of the day against Omaha, 8-2.
"Avery is a great example of why I do what I do," FGCU head coach
David Deiros said. "To see her progression and maturation from a freshman to now a senior leader is highly rewarding. Her 100 hits are a testament to her perseverance in the batter's box and in practice every day. It is just the start of a remarkable season for her."
Nikki Gibson extended her on-base streak to 22 games with walks in the bottom of the second in both games on Saturday.
The Badger-Eagle matchup saw
Victoria Ash enter the circle for FGCU. Ash pitched five innings only allowing one earned run and five hits.
Allison Sparkman came on for the sixth out save to secure the win.
Eagle offense came from the bat of
Sophie Wylie when she put the ball in play to where Gibson could beat the throw home and
Emily Chiarella could reach third. Wylie then drew the throw down to second and kept the pickle alive long enough for Chiarella to cross home, giving the Green and Blue an early 2-1 lead.
No more runs would be scored for the remainder of the game, securing the one-run victory for FGCU.
The Eagles came right back out to face Omaha (8-1). The Mavericks pounced early, putting up four in the first and one in the second before the Eagles could get on the board.
Wylie would drive in two in the second with a single down the left field line, but FGCU could not provide enough offense in the 8-2 loss.
FGCU will face Omaha again on Sunday. The scheduled first pitch is at 12:30 p.m.
