Eagles drop Invitational finale

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University softball dropped the finale of the FGCU Invitational against Omaha 5-0 on Sunday.

Two of the best pitchers in the country entered the circle with Allison Sparkman for the Eagles (5-8) and Maddia Groff for the Mavericks (9-1). Groff was ranked as the 10th best pitcher in the country and Sparkman was ranked as the 26th best pitcher in the country according to D1Softball.com.

Omaha jumped out to an early lead, getting one on the board in the first. The Mavericks would put up five one-run innings to get their five runs on the day.

The Eagles got some offense going in the seventh when Emily Chiarella hit a single on the first pitch of the inning. Kalista Birkenstock came on to pinch hit and hit the ball to shortstop and beat the throw to first.

Chiarella and Birkenstock would advance to second and third on the next at bat but would not cross to end the game 5-0.

The Green and Blue travel to Orlando, Fla. for the SpaceU Classic from Friday to Sunday.
