FGCU sets program record with 72 kills in win over Stetson

DeLand, Fla.Abby Toeniskoetter matched her career high with 21 kills to help the Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team defeat Stetson, 3-1, on Wednesday. FGCU tallied 72 kills across four sets, surpassing the previous program record set against Florida Southern in 2006.

The win moves the Eagles to an 11-3 record in the ASUN Conference, tying them with Jacksonville and EKU.

Julija Grubisic Cabo registered her 13th double-double of the season with 11 kills and a career-high 19 digs. Barbara Koehler also notched a double-double, contributing 14 kills and 12 digs.

Catharina Scorza added a career-best 13 kills. Setter Eliska Vytiskova sparked the offense with a season-high 34 assists to go along with 12 digs.

"Our goal tonight was really to limit the mistakes on our side of the net and the first couple of sets we didn't do a very good job of that," said head coach Thais Baziquetto- Allen. "Once we settled in we played much more efficiently and that made us more successful. Abby was outstanding on the offensive side tonight, credit is also due to the passers for putting our setters in a position to get her the ball."

The Hatters (9-17, 5-9 ASUN) started strong, jumping out to a 9-2 lead before the Eagles responded with a 17-7 run to take a 19-16 advantage. Stetson rallied again, outscoring FGCU 9-4 to capture the opening set, 25-23.

FGCU regrouped in the second set, building a 19-15 lead behind six kills from Toeniskoetter. Stetson battled back with a 7-4 surge to close within one at 23-22, but the Eagles held their composure to take the set, 25-22.

The third set followed a similar pattern as FGCU led 19-14 before a late Hatter push tied it at 22-22. The Eagles responded with three straight points to close out the set, 25-22, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth and final set, both teams traded points in a tight battle that was tied at 20-20. The Green &Blue remained steady down the stretch, sealing the win with a 25-23 set victory.

The Eagles remain on the road and will travel to Jacksonville for a 7 p.m. matchup on Friday.
