DORAL, Fla. - While other teams wilted in the 105+ degree heat index, the Florida Gulf Coast University women's golf team found another gear, setting a program record with a 272 in the afternoon round to hold a commanding 21-stroke lead over its nearest competitor at the Pat Bradley Invitational today.
Records fell for FGCU all over the course as the Eagles set the program record for lowest team score with a 277 in the opening round, played under cooler but warming conditions. There was no break between the rounds as the teams kept their same pairings for the second round and started on the same holes. Even then, the Eagles stayed hotter than the South Florida temperatures, rolling to a 12-under-par score as a team.
Individually,
Lousiane Gauthier had the best round in program history in the afternoon. After shooting a two-over-par 73 in the opening round, the Uruguayan recorded nine birdies in her second trip around the Silver Fox course en route to a seven-under-par score of 64. Her seven-under-par score ties for the lowest score in relation to par in program history as Laura Edmonds shot a 65 at the Pat Bradley Invitational in 2021; however, the event played to a par 72 that year, as opposed to a 71 in this edition.
Three Eagles are part of a quartet tied at the top of the leaderboard at five-under par. In addition to Gauthier,
Leonie Wulfers had rounds of 68 and 69 to sit at the top, while
Amelie Alcantara had rounds of 71 and 67 to make up the FGCU part of the trio. They are tied with Katharina Schroll of South Alabama, who matched with rounds of 68 and 69.
FGCU led after round one thanks in part to freshman
Islay Benoit, who was tied for the lead after the first round thanks to a four-under-par 67. Benoit recorded five birdies and one bogey in her round.
Posie Farrelly also had a countable score in the opening round thanks to a one-over-par 72. Her score included a 33 on the back nine with six pars and three birdies.
Farrelly also had the fourth score to count towards the team total for FGCU in the second round as she notched a 72 thanks to 15 pars, two bogeys and a birdie on hole No. 12. FGCU's triumvirate tied at the top of the individual leaderboard combined for 18 birdies and just five bogeys.Â
Atlantic Sun Conference foe Stetson sits in second place in the team standings, 21 shots behind the Eagles. South Alabama is one stroke behind Stetson in third and Cincinnati is one behind South Alabama in fourth.
The final round will tee off at 8 a.m. tomorrow. With a shotgun start, the Eagles will start on holes No. 1, 2 and 3 alongside Stetson and South Alabama.
