FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team delivered its fourth sweep of the season with a 3-0 victory over Queens University of Charlotte Saturday. The match opened home Atlantic Sun Conference action for the Eagles.
"The reason we won today is because we served great but Queens also served well," head coach
Matt Botsford said. "Right now we have to figure out who is going to stabilize our first contact. Getting aced 10 times in a three-set match is inexcusable and we have to correct that. We are giving a lot of opportunities to different players to try and find the solution and I'm hopeful that someone will take advantage."
In the first set, the Royals (3-9, 0-1 ASUN) gained a 6-2 lead, but the Eagles (10-3, 2-0 ASUN) answered with a 15-9 rally that featured three kills each from
Skylar English,
Sasha Van Der Merwe and
Shelby Kent to overtake the lead to 17-15. The Green & Blue then gained control and released eight points to the Royals' two, to storm away with a 25-17 victory.
The Eagles started the second set with a bang, jumping out to 15-6 lead. Queens' defense registered two points but could not find a consistent solution and the Green & Blue embarked on a 10-5 run to easily take the set 25-11. FGCU held the Royals to a .000 attacking percentage while hitting .609 as a team.
FGCU once again began the final set with dominance, gaining a 14-7 advantage before the Royals had a 12-6 rally to close the gap to just one, 20-19. The Eagles responded and blasted out a 5-1 run to win the set 25-20 and clinch the match 3-0.
Kent had a game high 16 kills, and
Shanelle Puetz registered 23 assists.
