Eagles win Johnie Imes, Alcantara takes individual title

Florida Gulf Coast University women's golf shot the best two rounds of the tournament and ran away with the team championship at the Johnie Imes Invitational Tuesday afternoon at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri.

Amelie Alcantara was the only player with a pair of under par rounds for the event, shooting five-under par for the tournament to win the event by four strokes. After sitting in a tie at the top after round one with a 69, the junior from Ocala, Florida, followed with a two-under par round of 70, tying for the lowest round of the day.

"I'm very happy and proud of this team for winning as a group and getting the individual win," said FGCU head coach Shannon Sykora. "We have been working hard at home and it really paid off this tournament."

Four FGCU golfers helped to round out the top five of the event. Leonie Wulfers, who birdied five holes in a row during Monday's opening round, made five birdies in her second round to card an even-par score of 72 to finish in third place with a one-over score of 145. Senior Posie Farrelly continued to play solid golf in the second round, signing for an even-par 72 to finish in a tie for fifth with a two-over 146. Freshman Islay Benoit battled to a 75 in round two, finishing tied with Farrelly at two-over par for the event. Playing as an individual, Sydney Deal finished off her maiden collegiate tournament in a tie for fifth as well at two-over.

FGCU's fourth countable score for the second round came from junior Lousiane Gauthier, who rallied with a two-over 74 in the second round to finish in a tie for 15th at four-over par.

As a team, the Eagles posted an aggregate score of 575, following yesterday's one-under par 287 with an even-par score of 288. The Green & Blue were 15 strokes better than host Missouri, which finished in second with a 590. Bradley and Illinois State finished in a tie for third with a 599, with Missouri State rounding out the top five with a 602.

The Eagles will return to the Sunshine State for the Pat Bradley Invitational, beginning Monday morning. Hosted by FIU, the tournament will take place at the "Blue Monster" course at Trump National in Doral.
