Four RBI coming from two triples and a home run were not enough for Florida Gulf Coast University to comeback against Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn. on Sunday with the Eagles falling 5-4.
The scoring for the Governors started mired in controversy when a third strike that was blocked by
Neely Peterson got caught up in the Austin Peay batter's feet. The Governors' batter kicked the ball three times out of the reach of Peterson allowing the runner on third to score. APSU would homer later in the inning to get a four-run lead.
The Eagles used extra-base hits to get on the board.
Riley Oakes tripled home
McKenzie Wittenberg to get the first Eagles run of the game. Wittenberg followed in Oakes' lead with a triple of her own, bringing in
Meagan Ricks and
Olivia Black. In Ricks next at-bat, she drove a ball over the left center wall for the fourth run of the game.
The seventh inning was close to seeing the Eagles complete the comeback.
Avery Viancos got on with a single and a double by Peterson brought Viancos to third. With one out on the board,
Nikki Gibson put the ball in play to the third baseman. Viancos broke for home but the throw beat her to the plate. Gibson stole second to put runners on second and third but a ground out to shortstop would end the comeback for the Eagles.
Up next is the final ASUN match up against the Kennesaw State Owls on May 3 and 4.
