Trailing 7-0 with two men out in the ninth, Florida Gulf Coast University mounted a charge to score six runs, but the Eagles came up one run short as Lipscomb University held on to win 7-6 in Atlantic Sun Conference baseball action from Nashville, Tenn., Saturday.
A walk to
David Parker preceded
Charles Davalan getting hit by a pitch with one out in the ninth. A fly out meant there were two men away and FGCU was down to its last out.
Ian Farrow would step up and single up the middle, bringing home pinch runner
Dalton Robinson to make it 7-1.
Evan Dempsey then came through with a single into center, making it 7-2 as Davalan trotted home.
Jacob Lojewski would hook a single into left, loading the bases for
Harrison Povey. On a 2-1 pitch, Povey powered his first grand slam of the season over the wall in right to make it a 7-6 game.
That would be as close as FGCU would get, as a pitching change by the Bisons would lead to a strikeout, giving Lipscomb the 7-6 win.
A five-run second inning would put Lipscomb (14-27, 10-10 ASUN) into the lead after two frames. The score stayed the same way until the eighth when Lipscomb added a pair of insurance runs that loomed large at the end of the game.
The Eagles (20-21, 12-8) had plenty of opportunities to score throughout the game as the guests left 10 men on base. Davalan, Farrow, Lojewski, and Povey each had multi-hit games.
Lucas Hartman (5-4) took the loss after allowing five runs in 5.2 innings of work.
Matt Kavanaugh alloed two runs in 2.1 innings of action.
The two teams will meet up in the rubber game tomorrow at Dugan Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
