Five different players had multi-hit games for Florida Gulf Coast University, but a pair of homers by Lipscomb University did in the Eagles in the finale of an Atlantic Sun Conference series as the Bisons took a 7-6 win Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.
The Eagles (20-22, 12-9 ASUN) drew first blood in the second inning as
Harrison Povey lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score
Evan Dempsey with the game's first run. In the third, the Eagles pushed the advantage to four. With runners on the corners,
Ian Farrow's ground out plated
Trevor Kole for a 2-0 lead. Dempsey and
Jacob Lojewski would follow with back-to-back RBI singles to make it a 4-0 contest.
In the bottom of the third, the first of two costly homers would happen as a three-run blast brought Lipscomb (15-27, 11-10 ASUN) within a run. The Eagles would answer back in the top of the fourth as
Mac Moise singled into right to score
Robert Moya to make it a 5-3 lead for the guests.
The fourth inning would be the undoing of the Green & Blue as Lipscomb loaded the bases with no one out. A pair of strikeouts for FGCU pulled the Eagles within an out of getting out of it unscathed, but the first pitch of the next at-bat would be sent out for a grand slam and a 7-5 Lipscomb lead.
In the eighth, the Eagles would cut the lead in half. After
Javier Gorostola singled to start the inning, Kole ripped a double to the gap in right center to bring the freshman home. Kole would take third to put the tying run 90-feet away with no one out, but the Eagles couldn't get the tying run home.
FGCU would get two men on with one man out in the ninth, but the tying run would again be left on third as Lipscomb held on for the win.
Chase Kriebel (3-2) allowed six runs in three-plus innings of work, with
Justin Henschel allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts in five innings of action.
The Eagles will be back in action Wednesday when they host FIU for the fourth game of the season series. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
