FORT MYERS, Fla. -
Ian Farrow hit a pair of solo homers as Florida Gulf Coast University dropped the final game of an Atlantic Sun Conference series to Austin Peay State University 19-12 at Swanson Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles amassed 14 hits, but the only two hits of the extra-base variety came off the bat of Farrow. Still, FGCU led 3-1 after an inning of play thanks to an RBI single by Farrow, a
Jacob Lojewski sacrifice fly, and an RBI single by
Robert Moya.
Austin Peay would come through with seven runs in the second and a single run in the third to take a 9-3 lead. The Green & Blue would mount a big inning of their own, scoring seven runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Farrow started the inning with a leadoff homer to spark the rally, which would soon include RBI singles off the bat of
Harrison Povey,
Javier Gorostola, and
Dalton Robinson. FGCU's next-best chance at an extra base hit came when
Charles Davalan hit a deep drive that went off the wall in center to score Gorostola, but the trajectory of the ball and the path of the outfielder kept the next FGCU runner at second instead of putting two in scoring position. The Eagles would still plate both runners, however, as
Mac Moise singled home a run and
Evan Dempsey beat out a would-be double play ball to drive in the go-ahead run to make it 10-9.
The Governors (23-16, 11-7 ASUN) immediately answered back with six runs in the fourth to take a 15-10 lead. Farrow trimmed the lead to four in the fifth with his second solo homer of the day, and the Eagles would threaten to tie the game in the seventh. FGCU (19-19, 11-7 ASUN) would load the bases with one out, but Lojewski's ground out to third would result in the only run the Eagles could muster in the inning.
In the ninth, APSU would score the final four runs of the game, putting it out of reach of the Eagles. FGCU would leave two runners in scoring position, part of a dozen left on base for the game, as the Governors took the series with the win in the rubber game.
Justin Henschel pitched five solid innings of relief, throwing 99 pitches with three of the four runs he was charged coming after he left the game.
The Eagles will be back in action Tuesday against in-state foe UCF in Orlando. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
