Eagles sweep doubleheader against Hatters, clinch postseason berth

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University softball took both games of the doubleheader on Saturday against Stetson University by scores of 4-1 and 5-4. Avery Viancos and Olivia Black each had three hit games on the day.

Viancos reached base in her first four plate appearances on the day, spanning both games of the doubleheader. "I just get in a groove sometimes and I'm really working hard for my team," Viancos said. "It's my job to get on base and I love doing that for everybody."

Angelina Bonilla continued to shine from the circle for the Eagles. Bonilla entered the circle for the complete game victory in the first game and came in for her eighth save of the season in the second game to extend her ASUN lead in saves.

"I'm glad I was able to help the team win and it makes me really happy to sweep the day. Hopefully, we can come back tomorrow and get the series sweep," Bonilla said.

Bonilla entered the circle for the first game and continued her string of stellar starts. Bonilla earned her team-leading seventh complete game and her fifth in six ASUN starts. Bonilla struck out six and walked none.

The scoring got started in the first for the Eagles when Neely Peterson drove in her team-leading 26th and 27th RBI to give FGCU an early 2-0 lead.

Riley Oakes then put the game out of reach with an RBI single to bring in Viancos who had reached on a triple. Following a Nikki Gibson single, Oakes stole home after Gibson enticed a throw down to second.

With Bonilla in the circle, that was all the Green and Blue would need to get the first win of the day.

The ASUN's best statistical pitching staff continued to show how it keeps ASUN batters on edge. Allison Sparkman, Ally Hulme, Claire Maulding, and Bonilla all entered the circle in this game, only allowing one earned run and striking out six.

Black made herself known during this game, recording three hits, three RBI, and scoring the winning run of the game.

"It's been the same story all season long, knowing that the person behind me has my back," Black said. "That's the key to going in there, feeling comfortable knowing that if I can't get the job done I've got an even better person right behind me. It was just trusting in that and staying relaxed."

Black singled home the first run of the game to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead and would bring home two more to draw the Green and Blue even at three.

Oakes took over the offensive production for the remainder of the game, scoring on a Gibson single. Oakes then stepped to the plate and brought home Black with a single of her own to secure the 5-4 win.

"I knew once I stepped in the box that I needed to keep things simple," Oakes said. "When I saw [Olivia] cross the plate I knew I did my job."

With the victory, FGCU has clinched a playoff berth. Up next is the series finale against Stetson.
