Florida Gulf Coast University scored the game's opening run, but Stetson University would answer back to take the second game of a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference baseball series Saturday night, 12-2, at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.
The Eagles (16-17, 9-5 ASUN) got on the board early thanks to the speed and awareness of
Charles Davalan. After a leadoff single, the freshman would move up to second base via a balk. With one out in the inning, Davalan took off for and stole third base. When the throw back to the pitcher was wide, Davalan would quickly head for home, scoring the game's first run.
Stetson (24-11, 10-4 ASUN) would answer back in the second with a single run, with the Hatters slowly building up a 4-1 lead through five. In the top of the sixth,
Ian Farrow continued his triumphant return from injury when he pulled a 1-2 pitch down the line in left for a solo homer, cutting the deficit to two, 4-2.
That would be as close as the Eagles would get the rest of the way. Stetson would score five runs in the seventh to blow the game open, with the home side adding three in the eighth to end the game an inning early.
Lucas Hartman (5-2) took the loss for FGCU, allowing five hits and three runs in four innings of work with a pair of strikeouts.
The Eagles will look to take the series Sunday afternoon in the rubber game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
