Mac Moise drilled a seventh-inning homer and scored four runs as Florida Gulf Coast University won an Atlantic Sun Conference baseball series with a 8-3 victory over Stetson University Sunday afternoon in DeLand, Fla.
The Eagles (17-17, 10-5 ASUN) won a series on the road for the first time this season, with this one coming at as big of a time as possible. Facing a team that was tied for first in the league before the weekend started, the Eagles themselves vaulted into a four-way tie for first after the final out was recorded.
Moise doubled in the second and scored his first run of the game as he came home on a ball off the bat of
Trevor Kole to make it 1-0. Two innings later, he would draw a walk and score off a
Jacob Lojewski double to make it 2-0. The leadoff walk would help spark the inning for the Eagles as FGCU would plate four in the frame thanks in part to an
Evan Dempsey triple and an
Ian Farrow single.
In the eighth, Moise would be hit by a pitch and would motor home to score on another Lojewski's double to stake the Eagles to a 6-0 lead. Stetson (24-12, 10-5 ASUN) scored three in the bottom of the eighth, but Moise would let the air out of the host's balloon in the ninth. With two men out and
Harrison Povey on first, Moise drilled a two-run bomb to left center to give the Eagles the 8-3 lead.
Chase Kriebel (3-1) extended his scoreless innings streak to 12. After working the final seven innings last week against Central Arkansas without giving up a run, Kriebel left the bases loaded in the fifth and final inning of his afternoon.
Ryland Bozenhard left the bases loaded in the sixth as well and stranded a runner in scoring position in the seventh. While Bozenhard was charged with three runs in the eighth,
Justin Henschel recorded the final five outs to preserve the win for FGCU.
The Eagles will be back in action Tuesday at USF. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
