FORT MYERS, Fla. - After sweeping an Atlantic Sun Conference series last weekend at home, Florida Gulf Coast University will look to continue tacking in the right direction as the Eagles travel to DeLand to take on Stetson University. First pitch in Friday's opener is set for 6:30 p.m. at Melching Field.
The Eagles (15-16, 8-4 ASUN) rode strong pitching and clutch hitting to a series sweep of Central Arkansas last weekend here at Swanson Stadium. In Friday's opener,
Davian Garcia gave FGCU 6.2 solid innings on the hill to start, with
Justin Henschel finishing the game off for the win as the Eagles held off UCA 8-6. Three runs in the eighth proved to be the offensive difference in the contest. A day later, a three-run seventh propelled the Eagles to a 7-6 win.
Jake Bunz and
Alejandro Valiente combined to pitch five scoreless innings of relief, with
Robert Moya sparking the rally with a solo homer in the deciding frame. In Sunday's contest,
Chase Kriebel needed just 90 pitches to toss a complete game as
Jacob Lojewski's two-run homer in the third held up to give the Eagles a 3-2 win and series sweep.
Stetson (23-10, 9-3 ASUN) has been a strong force so far this season, especially at the friendly confines of Melching Field. The Hatters are 19-5 at home, including a 5-1 mark in conference play. Most recently, the Hatters topped No. 16 UCF 5-3 Wednesday night at home. Kyle Jones currently leads Stetson with a .460 batting average in conference play and is one of three Hatters with an OPS over 1.000 so far in ASUN competition.
Stetson is currently tied with Jacksonville for first place in the ASUN standings, with FGCU one game behind the duo at the top.
Saturday's first pitch will also be at 6:30 p.m., with Sunday's finale primed for a 1 p.m. start.
